Shirley Wilson, Sculpture and Environmental Art
This is a series of aesthetically motivated works exploring ‘carbon’ in its many guises. Taking a critical view, my artwork examines our contributions and re-interprets them to reflect ecological, cultural and economic realities. Though I use a variety of materials and processes, my work is linked by recurring concerns and subject matter.
The elements Sulfur, Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen and Nitrogen are also the predominant components of coal, still the most abundant source of energy for the generation of electricity worldwide. I have deconstructed the coal and displayed its component parts in domestic containers, much like modern-day canopic jars, serving as a reminder of the importance of preservation, of ourselves and of our world.
