Clean Air Studios

GSA Media Studio Team

We here at The Media Studio of the Glasgow School of Art had a problem.

A problem that is common to all users of computers, not just high-end postproduction [video/audio/design/images] facilities like ours. We also have an environment where we cannot open the windows and aerate the rooms. On top of that we also have got people coming in to use work in postproduction, sometimes up to 8 hours and more per day. Multiply this by 20-odd computers and there are a lot of people and a lot of computers using the air and creating pollutants.

What to do?

The solution seemed simple and after some research was implemented with the help of the sustainability department of The Glasgow School of Art.

Plants!

We found the right kinds of plants that will not only oxygenate the air but also filter out pollutants and purify the air. Oddly enough the good old spider plant is one of the best, followed by money plants, ficus, ivy, sansevieria,….

Here are the proper names for those plants best suited:
Sansevieria Zeylanica, Sansevieria trifasciata Laurentii, Sansevieria trifasciata Futura Superba, Sansevieria Cylindrica, Ficus benjamina Twilight, Ficus benjamina Danielle, Ficus benjamina Anastasia, Dieffenbachia Camilla, Dieffenbachia Bertina, Chlorophytum laxum Pacific, Spathiphyllum Chopin Peace Lily, Chlorophytum comosum Bonnie, Chlorophytum comosum Ocean
So with some pots, some compost, some trays and of course, a few growing lamps we were ready.

It was quite a surprise how much of a difference 3 trays of plants can make to all working in the Media Studio, students & staff. We have had so many positive replies about our plants that we are now working on creating a green wall to make working not only visually more pleasurable, but alas to further purify & oxygenate the air.

We can highly recommend putting some plants in your workplace! If you have little space – start small! Or contact us again to see how you can have a relative easy to maintain green wall…

Best
