Race, Space and Architecture

A new curriculum

Places Journal reports on new approaches for architects reflecting race, space and architecture.

“Colleagues Huda Tayob and Suzanne Hall have been at work since autumn 2018 on a transdisciplinary open-access curriculum in Race, Space, and Architecture. Incorporating history, critical race theory, and studies of cities from Beirut to Dakar to Kuala Lumpur to New York, the project also gives prominence to fiction, biography, poetry, and film. With Thandi Loewenson, they are now developing the curriculum into a free, web-based platform that invites further engagement from readers and users. As part of our occasional series of conversations, Tayob spoke by email with Places senior editor Frances Richard about the inseparability of place-making and racialization, and the importance of polyvocality and transdisciplinarity in architecture and design education.”
