Visualising Data

Accountants, communication design and the council's Big Data

Glasgow City Council publishes environmental data, (ie climate change reporting) which by its nature is complex and difficult to relate to.

It is vital for people in Glasgow to connect to this data so they can understand the effects their decisions and actions have on their environment. A dialogue needs to exist between the collectors and disseminators of the data and the public; the researchers call this “new dialogics”: and they have asked students in GSA’s Communication Design department to help them create this new dialogue which will draw upon a much wider variety of formats and mediums than just numbers.

The purpose of the research is to test whether this new method of ‘reporting’ will be more effective than traditional methods.

The results are now available, based on the source data we used.
